Halloween Carnival

Timeframe October
Chairperson David Lee & Filiz Crocker (2013-14)
Description Usually held on the last Saturday in October in partnership with Mission San Jose Elementary School, The Halloween Carnival is a major social event for the entire school and is attended by more than 800 people every year.
The site and responsibilities of the carnival rotates each year with the home school being responsible for games and decorations and the visiting school responsible for food and drinks.  In 2013, the event was held at Mission Valley.
Budget The Halloween Carnival is not a fundraising event for MVSA.  The main budgeting goal is to bring in enough income (from sale of wristbands and prepared foods) to cover all the expenses for the event (which include printing supplies, table rental, jump house rental, custodian clean-up fee, prizes for carnival games and costume contest, candies, art and crafts supplies, decorations, and other entertainment costs). For the 2013 event, the committee decided that sale price of wristband when purchased by the Wednesday before the event will be $6 and $8 at the day of the event (only children require wristbands). In 2013, the event brought in $7,600 with $5,800 in expenses (resulting in a net profit of $1,800, which is split evenly with MSJE).
Volunteer needs MANY volunteers (parents/teachers and high school students) are needed to help plan, organize and run the games, staff food booths, set up and clean up at the Halloween Carnival.  For the 2013 event, two separate sign-up lists were created on SignUpGenius.com, one for MVSA parent volunteer sign-up and the other one for Mission San Jose High School student volunteer sign-up.  MSJE also recruited parent volunteers from their school to run the General Store and serve food at the Scarecrow Café.  A free $5 meal card is given to any volunteer who help out for 2 or more shifts at the event. For the 2013 event, the following volunteering opportunities were created for the MVSA parent volunteer sign-up form:
